Watching The Sunrise Over The Alps

11:41

On my 16th birthday road trip around Europe, me and my dad were staying in Chamonix, on a tiny little campsite right below the mountains.  On the last day we were staying there (we only spent three nights in the Alps) I decided that it would be a great idea to get up at 4am and watch the sunrise over the mountains.

Turns out that the getting up at crazy o'clock wasn't a good idea (I spent 30 minutes lying in bed debating whether I was actually going to get up or not) but the seeing the sun reflect of the snow-topped mountains part was an amazing idea.

I was cold, tired and hungry (the bakery on the campsite wasn't open that early) but it was one of the most amazing things I've ever experience in my life. There's something really quite wonderful about being the only person awake, when everything is silent, feeling so small, so insignificant. That thought may scare some, but it comforts me. Knowing that however amazingly I mess up, the world will keep on turning, everyone else will keep on breathing. It helps put things into perspective I guess.

Gothaard.
