A defence of Pop Culture
09:41
Pop culture is a very controversial subject. Some peoples livelihoods depend on it, others wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. I myself used to be one of the latter, although I have now come to love celebrity culture. While I recognise that much of it is vapid and meaningless drama, that is what I love about it. It's Escapism. It's a release form mundane reality of being a teenager who is probably still going to be in the education system until i'm 22/23, suffers from depression and anxiety and has has to pretend to be fine.
Spending 30 minutes, an hour, or whatever looking through instagram, tumblr, twitter, watching Clevver 'news' and anything else where there is access to celebrities and the ridiculous lives they lead is fab rest-bite from the 'real world'.
I'm not dismissing the obvious problems with celeb-culture - e.g. clique's, unreasonable standards of beauty, lack of diversity etc. - but I am defending people's choice to be interested in something fun and frivolous without being labeled as stupid, an air-head or less than those who pride themselves on being more interested in hipster thing and/or more intellectual activities - to quote Taylor Swift 'you would hide away and find your peace of mind / With some indie record that's much cooler than mine'
Honestly I know it's probably not the most healthy way of escaping everyday life (and I should really sort the underlying cause of why I want to - but I'm working on that), but it's nice to switch off your brain for a bit and just be mindless and humoured by celebrity antics.
